Maybe the ravens carried the news. Anyway the word went out, “There’s gold in the creeks on Gastineau Channel.” The miners came almost immediately. From Sitka, from Wrangell, and from the back of beyond. They came in rowboats, and sailboats, and dugout canoes, and almost anything else that would stay afloat. Whether they all made it or not nobody knows for there were rough and lonely waters to cross and winter gales were coming on.
