As part of a portfolio of works by fellow Juneau artists, this print was commissioned to celebrate 1980, Juneau's centennial year. Their theme was to relate to the history and spirit of Juneau. After the exhibition, the Centennial Committee offered these prints for purchase. In the early days of gold mining in the Juneau area, drilling of the rock for blasting was done by hand, usually by teams of two miners. Hand drilling was also a popular Fourth of July contest, with the deepest hole in a set time winning the event.
