In a town with many lonely men and where there were Good women and Bad women and no confusion in anybody's mind about which was which, brothels were an accepted fact of life. Some were pretty rough, but some were conducted with elegance and style, as witnessed by the engraved invitations to the opening of her new establishment sent out to a select list by an enterprising madame of those early days, Miss Gertie Joseph, whose place of business was called "The Red Light."
