AKA: Seal Gets Stuck in the Mud

Hand pulled by the artist from the original endgrain maple blocks and printed on an Ettan etching press at Sitka, Alaska, August, 1991.

An Athabascan folk tale. Raven invited Seal to fishing with him. Seal didn't want to go because he was afraid Raven would play some kind of trick but he finally agreed to go along.

When they came to a place where there was quick sand under the water Raven, who is very light went hopping over it and said to Seal, "See, it's easy!" But Seal got stuck halfway across and Raven pulled his guts out through his anus and ate Seal. Then he went home crying, "Oh my poor friend! He fell over a cliff and was killed." Nobody believed him.
