DeArmond's version of the "delightful little boats that fish the river when the red salmon are running. They catch an astonishing number of beautiful big salmon." The Naknek has long been known for its abundant runs of red salmon – mostly taken with gillnets. In 1897, for example, the pack consisted of 216,500 red salmon, 215,000 of which were caught by gillnets!
