Editor's note: more information is needed for this title. Three low-resolution examples are shown, which should be representative of its image. It is unusual for an early woodcut by Dale to have been produced with such a large edition (during this time period, her prints would typically have editions between twenty and thirty-five), perhaps an indication of its popularity.
Based on the "Old Witch" totem pole carved by Dwight Wallace (Haida: gid kʼwáajuss), a Raven Kaigani Haida man from Klinkwan, c. 1880. It was purchased in the early twentieth century by Robert Simpson, who (along with his wife) owned and operated The Nugget Shop, a gift and curio store in Juneau, Alaska and kept outside the shop.
In the 1940s the totem pole was donated to the City of Juneau. But a survey of the pole in 1969 indicated its condition had deteriorated, so much that it was considered incapable of standing on its own (without support). In 1970 it was permanently loaned to the state museum. Today it stands in the 8th Floor lobby of the State Office building in downtown Juneau.
