AKA: He Becomes a Fish to Steal the Fisherman's Gear

Hand pulled by the artist from the original endgrain maple block on an Ettan etching press at Sitka, Alaska, October, 1991.

This is an Athabascan folktale. The traveler-who-went-through-everything was going down the Yukon River and saw an old man fishing. The traveler turned himself into a big fish and let the man catch him so he could steal the old man's fishing gear. He made himself very big and heavy so the old men had trouble carrying him. When the old man put him down (T)he traveler turned back into a man and ran off with the hook and line.
