Many old timers were quite content to have Alaska remain a Territory, arguing that it was too big and the population too small to support statehood. However, there were those who wanted statehood and they were joined by newcomers who felt they were being deprived of their civil rights, living in a Territory. The petitions finally had their effect, or the stars were right, or wrong, one day, and Congress granted statehood to Alaska. On July 4th, 1959, the first 49-star flag was raised on the pole in front of the Juneau Memorial Library with appropriate speeches, ceremonies, and fireworks. In the background old-timers shook their heads and dourly predicted it would never work. To this day nobody is quite certain it will work, but it is a State, even if the population is only as big as one small city in the lower 48, in a spread of country almost too big to be realized (text from 1973).
