Like most American small towns of that day Juneau had its Opera House. In it were shown stage shows, mostly amateur dramas, school entertainments, vaudeville, even opera when a rare traveling troupe came through. Political rallies were held there too and were well attended. Juneau was a politically minded town from the first and a keen interest in politics was part of the American way at that time. Juneau sponsored the first political convention in Alaska in 1881. They sent an unofficial representative to Washington to try to get some civil government in Alaska. It must have had some effect because by 1884 Alaska had a Governor, appointed by the President, a U.S. marshal, a judge, a district… and lots and lots of lawsuits.
